Abstract

1,105,871. Raising fabrics. TOMLINSONS (ROCHDALE) Ltd. 4 June, 1965 [4 June, 1964]. No. 23097/64. Heading D1S. A raising machine for textile fabric is provided with automatically operable means adapted to vary the degree of raising or felting in predetermined sequence and in accordance with information fed to the raising machine drive mechanism from a data storage unit operable upon receipt of a signal emitted when a predetermined length of fabric being raised or felted has passed over the machine thereby to energize means associated with the data storage unit. The machine comprises pile and counter-pile rollers D, Fig. 8 mounted between bearings C around the peripheral region of a pair of spaced discs B secured to a drive shaft A. The pile rollers D are each provided with a belt pulley E adjacent one disc B and the counter pile rollers D are each provided with a pulley E adjacent the other disc B. Gear wheels F rotatably mounted on the shaft A each carry four brackets G spaced apart by 90‹ and to which there are attached V-belts H to contact the pulleys E and drive the rollers D. The gears F and hence the rollers D are driven in the opposite direction to the direction of rotation of the shaft A. In one embodiment, the gears F are each driven from the shaft A through a chain drive and an infinitely variable gear box or, in another embodiment, the gears F are driven from constant speed a.c. motors and associated dynamic couplings. The automatic control means is electrical and is operable by signals actuated by one of the following means: (a) a first member cooperating with a second member associated with the fabric, (b) a photo-electric cell cooperating with a reflective tally carried by the fabric. (c) a mechanical feeler which serves to trip a microswitch, there being a second feeler carried by the fabric, (d) a magnetic switch actuated by the passage of a magnetic strip carried by the fabric, (e) a pile density or depth indicator serving to actuate a switch in accordance with the pile condition of the fabric (f) a revolution counter so geared as to indicate a full revolution of a fabric loop, each revolution counted serving to operate a control circuit switch, or (g) a time mechanism so arranged as to operate a control circuit switch at pre-set time intervals which are correlated to the fabric speed. The automatic control means is actuated only after the machine has been set to run initially at "zero raising condition", i.e. with no speed differential between the wires of the card clothing of the rollers and the fabric being treated. The data storage unit may be in the form of a drum adapted to be rotated intermittently to cause data cards to be brought into alignment with a photo-electric cell or a feeler mechanism adapted to actuate a control circuit switch to index the drum from one position to the next. Alternatively, the unit may be in the form of discs eash having a series of peg receiving holes therein and mounted on a ratchet wheel, peg contactors being located adjacent the discs whereby when a contactor is operated by a peg a switch is closed to operate the control circuit. Prior to operation, the punched cards or the pegged discs are produced by passing a sample lengths of fabric over the machine. Tachometer readings indicating the speed of the pile and counterpile rollers are taken for zero raising conditions and during subsequent raising or felting runs to determine the number of runs required to obtain the desired finish of the fabric. The electrical circuit for the operation is described.
