Abstract
<PICT:1105200/C6-C7/1> Apparatus for degassing molten metal comprises a frame on which is mounted a vacuum chamber and which is adapted to support a transport ladle connectable in that position by a bottom discharge outlet with the inlet of the vacuum chamber. The latter has, offset from the inlet, a vertical discharge duct of length exceeding the barometric height of the metal and has also a connection to a vacuum pump by means of an exhaust pipe including joints which permit movement of the chamber relative to the pump. As shown in Fig. 1 vacuum chamber 22 is mounted on frame 2, which also supports ladle 16; the latter discharges through connection 36, 34 into the vacuum chamber 22 the metal then leaving by duct 24 and passing to pouring chamber 28, from where it is teemed by stopper rod 46 into a series of moulds. The chamber 22 is connected by pipes 98, 56, 58 and 60, and joints 94, 62, 64 and 84 to vacuum manifold 54, joints 62 and 64 being suspended from overhead runways 92, and 88 respectively. To allow for vertical adjustment joint 94 is axially adjustable by screw jacks 102 which may be controlled by mercury switch 109. Alloying additions may be made to the metal in the vacuum chamber by hopper 48, and to the pouring chamber through opening 50.
