Abstract

1,104,154. Gear-hobbing and thread-milling. LEES-BRADNER CO. 1 March, 1965, No. 8630/65. Heading B3K. A machine tool selectively convertible for use as a hobbing machine and for thread milling comprises a tool spindle for receiving a selected cutter 18 thereon, a main drive-shaft 21 having a releasable drive connection 21a, 21b with the input 33 to a rotatable housing lead differential L, a first motor 102 for driving the spindle and drive-shaft, a first index gear train 49-50 for delivering the output of the lead differential to a work spindle 55, a rotatable housing traverse differential mechanism T, a second gear train 57, 59, 61 having a drive input to the traverse differential T, a further gear train 69-70 having driving connection only, when closed, with a lead-screw 66 and with the rotatable housing of the lead differential and a second motor 92 for effecting a driving connection to the rotatable housing of the lead differential when the further gear train is open. When the machine is used for hobbing, the hob 18 is rotated by the variable-speed hydraulic motor 6 mounted on a swivelling hob-head. The motor also rotates the work-spindle 55 through the shaft 21 and the differential L. The drive gear 57 meshing with a gear on the work-spindle rotates the lead-screw 66 through a differential T to traverse the hob across a workpiece. A rapid traverse can be imparted by releasing a brake 79 and permitting a motor 77 to drive a worm 47 geared to the differential T. When the machine is used for thread-milling, belt-drives to the motors 92 and 102 are connected up and a gear 71 or 74 is disengaged to allow the rapid traverse motor 92, having an associated brake 93, to rotate a worm 45 geared to the differential L. Also, a lever 99 is moved to disengage the drive-shaft 21. The drive to the work-spindle 55 is then supplied by the motor 102, the motor 6 becoming merely a driving motor for a cutter (18<SP>1</SP>). To re-cut a thread, the cutter can be matched up to the cut thread by rotation of a hand wheel 107.
