Abstract
1,102,695. Boots &c. SHOE & ALLIED TRADES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. 17 Nov., 1965 [18 Nov., 1964; 30 June, 1965], Nos. 46885/64 and 27758/65. Heading A3B. A blank intended for use as a shoe upper forepart is preformed by clamping the blank, preferably in a single plane, and deforming the blank by a mould having a shape intermediate the initial shape of the blank and the shape of the last on which the forepart will ultimately be lasted. In a preferred embodiment (Fig. 3) the blank is clamped between two plates 116, 118 having cut-outs corresponding to the outline of the mould 114 and which are held together by piston and cylinders 46. The mould 114 is heated and is mounted on a plate 132 which is pivoted to a thrust rod 134 which runs in a guide 76 inclined at about 70‹ to the plane of the blank. The thrust rod 134 is raised by a piston and cylinder 68 via a toggle mechanism 56, 58. The mould 114 may also be tilted at the end of its upward movement by a piston and cylinder 80 so that the toe of the mould overlies the clamping plates 116, 118 as shown by line C. The upper clamping plate 116 may be formed with punches (not shown) which cut notches in or punch holes in the clamped periphery of the blank. In its simplest form (Fig. 1) the apparatus consists of a pair of plates 16, 18 clamped together by wing nuts and a mould 12 fixed to the end of a thrust rod 34. The shape of the mould is determined by first making a shell of deformable material having the shape of the last e.g. by vacuum forming thermoplastic sheet material on the last, then deforming the shell to a shape having its edges lying in a single plane and finally modelling the mould on the deformed shell.
