Abstract

1,100,234. Electromagnetic relays. INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORPORATION. 11 June, 1965, No. 24752/65. Heading HlN. A relay comprises a hermetically sealed tubular housing 2 formed from a stack of annular ceramic and metal segments 36 and 38. Contact carrying annular flanges 42-48 divide the housing into separate contact chambers. Each chamber, e.g. that between flanges 42 and 43 comprises a metal segment 38 brazed to flange 42, a ceramic segment 36 brazed to the upper segment 38, and a further metal segment 38 brazed to ceramic segment 36 and flange 43. An annular plate 61, clamped between the upper metal segment 38 and a ceramic backing ring 41, is provided with a resilient contact finger of molybdenum carrying a tungsten contact 63. Each movable contact is clamped between adjacent insulating segments of an actuating stem 23 secured to an armature 17. Cylindrical contacts 53 and 58 are secured to flanges 42 and 43. Contact 53 is grooved to provide a contact surface 54 which lies in the same plane as the contact surface 59 of contact 58. The moving contact 63 bridges contacts 53, 58 in the energized position and engages the stop surface 56 of contact 53 in the de-energized position. A baffle 64 carried by the resilient contact finger overlaps a cylindrical shield 52, which surrounds the actuating stem 23, to prevent vaporized contact material from migrating from one contact chamber to another. A single pole double throw relay is also described.
