1,100,195. Indirectly-heated cathodes. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 7 Dec., 1965 [10 Dec., 1964], No. 51832/65. Heading H1D. An indirectly-heated cathode comprises a folded heating element accommodated in a tubular sleeve carrying the emissive layer, at least one inwardly projecting part of the material of the sleeve being provided near one end of the cathode sleeve to locate a fold of the heating element. Inwardly projecting parts formed by out-out portions 6, Fig. 5, of the cathode sleeve 1 may extend parallel or perpendicular to the sleeve axis. Alternatively, the inwardly projecting parts may be formed by re-entrant portions 7, Fig. 4, of the cathode sleeve, with, if necessary, the addition of a ceramic tube 8 clamped between portions 7. In the latter case, an uninsulated heating element may be used, the cathode sleeve being coated internally with an insulating layer 9. A single inward projection may locate two folds of a doubly-folded heating element, Fig. 6 (not shown). Precise location of the folds of the heating element ensures that the ends 5 of the heating element project a predetermined distance from the cathode sleeve for soldering, welding or clamping to current supply conductors.
