Abstract

A reinforced polymer comprises an organic polymeric material and a mineral reinforcing agent, the latter being chemically bound to the polymeric material by a silane having the general formula <FORM:1097678/C3/1> in which X is a halogen atom or an alkoxy group, each of Y and Z is a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbyl group, R is an alkylene group having at least 10 carbon atoms, an alkenylene group or a cycloalkane group, a is 1, 2 or 3, b is 0, 1 or 2, c is 1, 2 or 3 and the sum of a, b and c is 4, e is 1 when R is an alkylene or alkenylene group or 1, 2 or 3 when R is a cycloalkane group. Preferred polymeric materials are polyamides, particularly polycaprolactam or polyhexamethyleneadipamide, and a polymer of an olefinic monomer when the silane contains an alkenylene group. The compositions are prepared by reacting a silane of the above formula either (a) with a functional group present in said mineral reinforcing agent, or (b) with a functional group present in a polymerizing monomer or prepolymer and then reacting a product obtained by a treatment under (a) with a monomer or prepolymer which is a precursor of an organic resinous material, which monomer or prepolymer contains a functional group reactive with said silane or reacting a product obtained by a treatment under (b) with a functional group present in said mineral reinforcing agent. The silanes in which the alkylene group has 10 to 20 carbon atoms or the alkenylene group has 2 to 20 carbon atoms are claimed as novel compounds. In the examples are used, as mineral reinforcing agent: mullite, calcium metasilicate, feldspar and wollastonite; as prepolymer material: alkali-catalysed e -caprolactam and a reaction product of a low molecular weight polycarbonate (prepared from bisphenol A and phosgene) and maleic anhydride; as silane: methyl 11-(trimethoxysilyl) undecanoate, ethyl 12 - (triethoxysilyl) tetradecanoate, n - butylb - (methyldichlorosilyl) acrylate, n - butylb - trichlorosilyl acrylate and ethyl - b - trichlorosilyl acrylate. In several examples a polyfunctional isocyanate promoter is added to the polymerization mixture, e.g. an 80/20 mixture of 2,4- and 2,6-diisocyanato-toluene. Glass fibres are also incorporated in Example 7.
