Abstract

1,096,713. Cleaning tanks. B. C. BRISTOW and R. A. McCLOUD. April 6, 1965 [March 19, 1965], No. 14592/65. Heading A4F. [Also in Division B2] In a tank cleaning machine intended to be suspended on a supply hose for cleaning liquid within a cargo tank of a railway car or a ship, cleaning liquid introduced through an inlet 12 in a main housing 10 actuates a turbine 72 on a shaft 74 carrying a pinion 78, which, through gears 82, 84, 88, 90, 93, 94 and 98, drives a pinion 102 meshing with a ring gear 104 on a housing 14 mounted on the housing 10 to rotate the housing 14 about a vertical axis at a slower speed than that of the turbine 72. The cleaning liquid passes through the housing 14 to be discharged through nozzles 18 carried by a housing 16 which is rotated about a horizontal axis by the reaction of the discharged liquid and the meshing of bevel gears 26, 52 on the housings 14, 16, respectively. The bevel gear 52 is locked to the housing 16 by a hydraulic clutch comprising a piston 58 held by liquid pressure in engagement with a recess 56 in the gear 52, so that when liquid is not supplied to the machine the nozzle housing 16 may be rotated manually.
