In an oil-fired domestic water heating boiler in which a plurality of substantially vertical water tubes 11 are arranged around the walls of the boiler and extend between top and bottom headers 12, 13, the tubes 11 have disposed behind them a refractory lining 9 which forms part of the wall of the boiler. In the combustion chamber 7 additional refractory material 10 is arranged in front of the tubes 11 to protect said tubes from direct contact with the flames of a burner (not shown) mounted in a door 5 at the front of the boiler. A further group of closely spaced water tubes 18 may be arranged above the door 5 and extend between the top headers 12 and a forward header 19 which is further connected to the bottom headers 13. This further group of tubes 18 are divided from the rest of the boiler by a wall 20 of refractory material which has an aperture down one side to allow the combustion gases to enter and flow over the tubes. A baffle 23 is situated along the length of the tubes 18, so causing the gases to flow horizontally away from the aperture in the wall 20, up over the end of the baffle 23 and then horizontally in the opposite direction before passing out of the boiler through the flue 25. An access door 16 and cover-plate 17 are provided. A pressure release door 27 and draught stabilizer 28 may be arranged in the flue. The top and bottom headers 12, 13 may be formed by rectangular cross-section pipes interconnected with ruffles 14, 15. Figs. 4-6 (not shown) show a way of attaching the additional refractory lining 10 to the tubes 11 by resilient members (37) having limbs (30) engaging in grooves (38) formed in separate block elements that are pressed between adjacent tubes 11 to form together the refractory lining 10.
