Abstract
Alkyl esters of di- and polymeric fatty acids are prepared by simultaneously dehydrating and polymerizing an alkyl ester of a hydroxy acid in an azeotroping solvent in the presence of a dehydrating catalyst. The acid is either a monohydroxy monounsaturated or a dihydroxy saturated aliphatic carboxylic acid. Esters of 10,12-dihydroxy stearic acid and ricinoleic acid are mentioned and the dehydration catalyst may be an acid clay, sodium bisulphate or sulphuric acid, or an alkaline earth. Examples describe the use of xylene as the azeotroping solvent for the dimerization and polymerization of castor oil.
