Abstract

Esters of unsaturated carboxylic acids are prepared by esterifying the acid with an alcohol in the presence of an aromatic sulphonic acid as catalyst, and a copper salt as polymerization inhibitor, and separating the catalyst and inhibitor from the product. Benzene sulphonic, o- and p-toluene sulphonic and the higher alkyl benzene sulphonic acids and a - and b -naphthalenesulphonic acid may be used as the catalysts and inorganic or organic copper salts, preferably cupric acetate, as the inhibitor. The catalyst and inhibitor may be removed by precipitation, preferably by an hydroxide or oxide of an alkaline earth metal, e.g. calcium hydroxide. The method is suitable for the preparation of alkyl esters from alcohols 8 to 20 carbon atoms and an example describes the preparation of a mixed stearyl and technical lauryl methacrylate.
