Abstract

Soaps of epoxidized fatty acids (C11-C22) and di- and polyvalent metals are prepared by saponifying the esters thereof with mono or polybasic alcohols in aqueous alcoholic solutions, 50-70% alcohol, of alkali metals, oxides, hydroxides or alcoholates and reacting the water-soluble alkali metal salts with aqueous solutions of salts of the di- or polyvalent metals. The alcohol, preferably a straight or branched chain alcohol with up to 4C atoms, may be in a 50-60% aqueous solution. The epoxidized methyl esters of undecylenic and oleic acids linseed oil fatty acids, a C20-22 acid mixture, soya bean oil, castor oil, olive oil and linseed oil and their barium, calcium, cadmium, manganese, magnesium zinc, lithium, aluminium and lead are referred to and examples describe the preparation of the cadmium soaps of an epoxidized methyl ester of undecylenic acid, an epoxidized linseed fatty acid methyl ester, and an epoxidized linseed fatty acid methyl ester and an epoxidized castor oil, the manganese, soap of epoxidized methyl ester of oleic acid, the lithium soap of epoxidized methyl oleate, the magnesium soap of epoxidized soya bean oil, the calcium soaps of epoxidized methyl ester of a C20-C22 acid mixture, and epoxidized olive oil, and the zinc soap of epoxidized linseed oil.
