Abstract

1,089,401. Power assisted steering. ROTENBURGER METALLWERKE G.m.b.H. Nov. 13, 1964 [Nov. 14, 1963], No. 46406/64. Heading B7H. [Also in Division F2] In a power assisted steering mechanism, a steering shaft 14 has a splined connection 12 with a steering nut 31 in which operates a worm 32 connected via a piston 16 and links 19 and 20 with a steering drive shaft 21. A control valve 33 surrounds the nut 31 and is centred between abutments by means of a pair of rings 40 acted upon by springs 39 and pressure fluid from a line 22. The control valve is allowed a limited amount of axial movement in one direction or the other due to reaction upon turning the steering wheel and results in directing fluid pressure to one side or the other of piston 16 through either a passage 37 or passages 38a, 38b, 38c through the casing and worm and piston. A series of concentric rings 52a, 52b, 64a, 54b, 56a and 56b are located on shaft 14 and have radially outwardly directed teeth which coact with radially inwardly directed teeth on a concentric series of rings 51a, 51b, 53a, 53b, 55a, 55b, 57a and 57b, rings 51a and 51b being fixed to the casing, and with a tooth on a ring 58 fixed to the shaft, whereby the angular rotation of the steering wheel is limited.
