Abstract

N-methylpyrrole is produced by passing N-methylpyrrolidine vapour and hydrogen at elevated temperatures over a platinum or palladium catalyst supported on silica gel. The amount of platinum or palladium is conveniently from 1 to 10% of the weight of the gel and the process is carried out at a temperature of 200-500 DEG C. Preferably the proportion of hydrogen in the gaseous mixture is high, e.g. at least 5 molecular proportions of hydrogen to one of N-methylpyrrolidine vapour. The hydrogen issuing from the condensers may be recycled. A method of preparing the catalyst is given.
