Abstract

Regenerated cellulose yarns and cords are treated with an aqueous solution containing 0.3-3% by weight of borax which has been adjusted to a pH of 6.5-7.7 by the addition of a buffer and then dried, to reduce their tendency to creep when used for reinforcing rubber products, e.g. tyres. The cords or yarns may be treated with the aqueous borax solution while in the wet or dry state, while travelling or wound on a spool or in the form of a spinning cake. They are preferably treated immediately after spinning, stretching and washing prior to drying, i.e. while still in the gel state, while passing them through a finishing bath or by spraying in conjunction with the finishing liquid, or may be stretched after treatment with the borax solution. The buffer may be a mixture of mono-sodium ortho phosphate and di-potassium ortho phosphate, tri (hydroxymethyl) amino methane, triethanolamine, maleic acid or boric acid and the solution may also contain wetting agents, agents which improve the adhesion of yarn or cord to rubber and agents which improve the resistance to heat and/or light of the yarns. Yarns may be treated while in the twisted or untwisted state, the twisting being effected while the yarns are still wet or after drying. Two or more yarns treated with the borax solutions may be twisted together to form a cord prior to or after drying.
