Abstract

Fibres are bonded to form a filament-like element by giving a sliver or roving a twist of more than two turns per inch, impregnating it with a bonding agent, stretching it to substantially its breaking point and setting the bonding agent while stretched. Compression may be applied during stretching. The roving &c. may be impregnated by passing it from one spool to another over rollers and through a bath of the bonding agent, of which examples containing synthetic resins are given. After ageing, it is stretched and passed, still under tension, around grooves in the outer sides of a heated chamber. The product may be coated with latex, resins or waxes.
