Abstract

A simulated pile fabric comprises a fibrous web, coextensive with a reinforcing member, and containing fibres located in planes normal to the surfaces of the web and projecting beyond a surface of the web and through the reinforcing member as fibre tufts, Fig. 3 (not shown) which are secured in the reinforcing member. The securing of the fibre tufts is achieved by the activation of a potentially adhesive component of heterofilaments used in making the web. The method of manufacture comprises passing a fibrous web supported on a reinforcing member, i.e. hessian, through a needle loom. The fibre tufts may be crimped to effect spreading of the fibres to conceal the reinforcing member. Fibres employed in making the web may be polyamide, polyester, acrylic, cellulosic, or combinations thereof.
