[Also in Division D2] An improved forming medium 3 for use in the forming section of a paper-making machine comprises a base structure 17 characterized by being constructed substantially entirely of material having a high tensile strength and abrasion resistance, and being highly and substantially uniformly permeable throughout, e.g. a woven structure of synthetic fibre yarns, and a thin non-woven layer 23 of fibrous material needled to said base structure; at least some of the fibres of said non-woven layer being bonded together and to said base structure, the permeability to fluids of such a medium being only slightly less than that of said base structure. The woven fabric may be made from polyester, nylon or acrylic fibres, an exemplified fabric having polyester yarns 19 extending in the machine direction and nylon yarns 21 extending in the crossdirection. The non-woven layer 23 may consist of nylon, polyester, acrylic or natural fibres, e.g. wool, or blends thereof and the fibres may be oriented in one direction, randomly oriented or oriented to have substantially equal numbers of fibres extending in all directions. The bonding may be effected by heating the thermoplastic fibres or by a synthetic resin, e.g. an acrylic, epoxy or phenolic resin which may be applied to the fibres of the non-woven layer prior to laying-down and needling; alternatively, the needled layers may be passed through a solution of the bonding agent.
