Abstract

Olefins are obtained from a paraffin fraction in the C5-C20 range differing in carbon number by not more than 2 by halogenating to a conversion of not more than 0.5 mol per mol of hydrocarbon and continuously dehydrohalogenating under fractional distillation conditions in a packed tower, in which the packing carries an iron (II) salt catalyst, at 150-500 DEG C. and condensing hydrocarbons in the overhead at above 150 DEG C. and removing the hydrogen halide formed at this temperature. Normal, iso and cyclic paraffins can be used. The pressure should be such that the olefin product is obtained as distillate. The concentration of halide in the halogenated material may be increased prior to dehydrohalogenation.
