Abstract
Acetylene or ethylene is obtained from hydro-carbons boiling in the range 200-400 DEG C. by passing as parallel liquid filaments through a reactor, contacting an inert gas with the filaments to obtain gaseous hydrocarbons, contacting these with an inert gas to cause cracking and quenching by further contact with the flowing liquid. In one embodiment the liquid is in the form of an annulus (Fig. 1, not shown); inert gas at above 1000 DEG C. is passed from the centre out through the liquid and there contacted with further gas at above 1200 DEG C. and the resultant gas passed upwardly through a constricted portion through which the liquid flows counter-currently. Unchanged liquid is recycled. Alternatively previously evaporated hydrocarbons separated from the inert gas are added to fresh inert gas and passed through the liquid and product and evaporated hydrocarbons produced are separated.
