Abstract
Ketene is produced by vapour phase catalytic pyrolysis of acetic acid in the presence of 1-15% by weight of the acetic acid vapour of water, introduced into the pyrolysis zone together with the acetic acid. The water may be added prior to or after the vaporization of the acetic acid and may be in liquid or vapour form. Acetic anhydride may also be added to the feed to suppress anhydride formation during the pyrolysis. The reaction is carried out between 625 DEG and 750 DEG C. and at a pressure between atmospheric and 20 p.s.i. A suitable catalyst is methyl phosphate. The vapours are allowed to remain in the reactor for between 0.01 and 5.0 seconds and ammonia may be added to the issuing mixture to neutralize the catalyst and prevent combination of the ketene with the acetic acid or water. The ketene is separated from the mixture by cooling.
