Abstract

Alcohols are prepared by the liquid phase oxidation of saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons having at least 10 carbon atoms or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbons having at least 6 carbon atoms with a molecular oxygen-containing gas at an elevated temperature and aqueous boric acid is continuously mixed, at a rate equivalent to the formation of the alcohol, with the hydrocarbon during the whole of the oxidation period and the water added and formed during esterification; the borate ester is subsequently hydrolysed to give the alcohol. The boric acid is preferably added as a hot saturated solution or as moist boric acid crystals. It is preferred to operate at 130-190 DEG C. Examples describe the preparation of cyclodecanol and n-tetradecanol; some ketone corresponding to the alcohol is also formed.
