Abstract

A process for decondensation of polyethylene terephthalate to dimethyl terephthalate comprises treating a polyethylene terephthalate with superheated steam, mixing the treated polyethylene terephthalate in finely divided form with excess methanol, reacting the resulting mixture at a temperature of from 280 DEG C. to 340 DEG C. and at a pressure of from 80 to 140 atm., releasing the pressure, freeing the reaction products from entrained substances in solid and/or vapour form and cooling the reaction products with fractionation.
