Abstract

A hot water central heating system includes a check valve comprising a body 1 and 2 defining a valve chamber 4 having fluid inlet and outlet ports, a seating 6 in the valve chamber 4 between the inlet and outlet ports and a valve member 5 lightly urged, at least when in the normal position of use, towards the seating 6, the valve and/or the seating having a surface of a material which will make substantially silent contact with hard surfaces. The member 5 may be a rubber ball which if its weight is not sufficient to effect closure may be spring-loaded. Alternately, the ball may be of rubber with a metal filler, such as lead. The ball is sufficiently loaded to effect closure of the valve against convection currents in the pipe 12, but will open with normal flow. An average specific gravity of 3 to 5 is suggested for the valve. Ribs 10 guide valve member and permit flow around its outside. The body comprises screw-connected upper and lower parts 1 and 2, the upper part having a stop 11, and both parts being connected to the flow pipe 12 by compression sleeves 14 and nuts 15. The valve allows flow when a circulating pump is operating but prevents flow under thermal circulation.
