A drifter apparatus for detecting surface or deep sea currents has a drogue 3 of synthetic plastics material comprising three surfaces 3a, 3b, 3c arranged in planes at right angles to one another. The drogue may be supported near the water surface W by a float 1 of synthetic plastics material or held on or near the sea bed by a weight 4. Holes 6 may be provided to prevent air being trapped between the surfaces 3a, 3b, 3c when the drogue is in water.
