Abstract
In a method for producing foamed metals or alloys in which the metallic substance is melted with a substance which produces a gas when heated to at least the melting temperature of the metallic substance, followed by cooling, siliceous aggregate particles are dispersed in the melt to reduce the fluidity thereof. The metallic substance may be Al, Mg, Zn, Pb, Cu, Ni or alloys thereof, the siliceous particles may be of vermiculite, perlite, talc, silica gel, pyrophyllite, mica or clintonite and the foaming agent may be titanium or zirconium hydride, metal sulphates or carbonates or metals which vapourize at the melting temperature of the metallic substance. The metal may also have added a metal which will react with water also added to give the metal oxide and gaseous hydrogen. The melt may be cooled in a mould to give a cast product and the foaming may in this case be carried out prior to putting the melt in the mould or thereafter.
