Abstract

1,074,796. Circumferential flow pumps. SIEMEN & HINSCH m.b.H. Oct. 30, 1964 [Oct. 31, 1963], No. 44295/64. Heading F1C. In a circumferential flow pump having a side channel 1 communicating with an open impeller wheel (not shown) provided with straight or singly curved vanes, at least one flow baffle rib 6, extending from the bottom of the channel over about one half to three quarters of the channel height, is provided. This construction reduces the power required to drive the pump at zero and small delivery rates. The ribs 6 are arranged in the radially central zone of the channel, the inner and outer vane-free zones each being about one quarter of the channel width. The ribs are of single curvature and have their free longitudinal edges extending parallel to the plane of the impeller. The distance between the end of the suction aperture 4 and the beginning of the first rib is at least two to three vane pitches of the impeller wheel, and the distance between the beginning of the discharge aperture 5 and the end of the last rib is at least one to two vane pitches. The ribs 6 may be replaced by a single rib extending concentrically with the channel 1.
