Abstract

A rubber-like material is obtained by reacting an organic polyisocyanate with a copolyester formed from ethylene glycol, succinic acid and an aliphatic alpha-omega-dicarboxylic acid containing 5-10 carbon atoms, the molecular proportions of the acids being from 1.2 to 4.0 of succinic acid to 1 of the other acid. Preferably the copolyester has a molecular weight of 1,500-10,000 and the amount of polyisocyanate used is such that there are 1.0-2.0 isocyanate groups present for each end group of the copolyester. The reaction may be modified by the addition of water, glycols or diamines. Specified polyisocyanates are tetramethylene-, hexamethylene-, p-phenylene-, m-phenylene-, toluylene-, diphenyl-4 : 41-, diphenylmethane-4 : 41-, diphenyl ether-4 : 41-, and naphthylene-diisocyanates, and toluene-2 : 4 : 6-, triphenylmethane-4 : 41 : 411-, and diphenyl-2 : 4 : 41-triisocyanates. The copolyesters used in the examples have hydroxy numbers of 22.6-62.5 and acid numbers of 0.2-1.1 and are made (a) by heating together under reduced pressure a low polyester of ethylene glycol and succinic acid with a low polyester of ethylene glycol and adipic acid, or (b) by heating a mixture of ethylene glycol, succinic acid and adipic acid first at normal pressure and then under reduced pressure. In examples: (1) and (2) the dried copolyester is heated with naphthylene-1 : 5-diisocyanate and then a jet of steam is directed on the surface of the mix which breaks down to a crumb which is passed through a mill and moulded; (3), (4) and (5) the dried copolyester is heated with adipic acid and naphthylene-1 : 5-diisocyanate or diphenyl-4 : 41-diisocyanate under reduced pressure, and the mixture poured into a mould and further heated; (6) the copolyester is heated with toluylene-2 : 4-diisocyanate and the product heated on a rubber mill with naphthylene-1 : 5-diisocyanate and dimethylcyclohexylamine and cured. The invention of Specifications 719,539 and 721,896 are disclaimed.
