[Also in Division B8] In a rake-type cooling bed 12 for light-section rolling mills, rolled bars 4 enter a trough 5 and lifting slides or retarders 10 in their lowered position form a part of the trough bottom plate. A straightening plate 11 of the cooling bed 12 is adjacent the entry trough 5, the bed comprising a movable upright 17 between each pair of adjacent fixed uprights 13. The uprights 17 are mounted on a common frame actuated by eccentrics in bearings set in the foundation. An hydraulic jack provides for limited horizontal movement of the frame whereby the first serration 18 may be in the trough 5 or in the region of the plate 11 (Fig. 2, not shown). Round or square section material enters the trough 5 at high speed and is slowed to half its entry speed by partially raising the slides 10, whereupon the slides are fully raised and the material is brought to a standstill on the plate 11. Angle and other similar section material enters the trough relatively slowly and is stopped on the partially raised slides 10, whereupon the upright 17 engages the material and lifts it from the trough on to the plate 11. In alternative embodiments, the hydraulic jack may be replaced by an eccentric or the like or by a crank coupled to a link mechanism (Fig. 3, not shown).
