Abstract
1,073,907. Centrifugal separators. GENERAL MOTORS Ltd. Oct. 7, 1965 [Oct. 15, 1964], No. 42104/64. Heading B2P. In an i.c. engine centrifugal air cleaner, one or more vanes 5 impart a gyratory motion to air entering the cleaner and vanes 7, Fig. 2 (not shown) extending from within the cleaner to within a conduit 6 impart to the air leaving the cleaner through the conduit a gyratory motion which is in the same sense as that imparted to the air by the vane or vanes 5. The cleaner comprises a housing formed by a cup member 2 to the rim of which is crimped outer peripheral portion of an annular plate 3 in which openings 4 are formed by pressing out the vanes 5. Further inlets may be provided by pressed out vanes 8. The vanes 7 are welded to the base of the member 2. The conduit 6 is welded to the inner peripheral portion of the plate 3. The centrifugal air cleaner may be connected to the inlet conduit of an oil bath air cleaner. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the vanes 7 are arranged within and extend axially beyond the end of the inlet conduit .10 of an oil bath air cleaner so that they project within a centrifugal air cleaner fitted over the conduit 10.
