Abstract

A method of making a microporous plastic material comprises forming a substantially single phase mixture by intimately mixing a plastic material, the working material, with a plasticizer, shaping the mixture, removing at least a portion of the plasticizer by treating the mixture with a leaching agent, in which the plasticizer is at least partially soluble and the working material is substantially insoluble, thus forming a microporous body. Heat may be necessary to form the substantially single phase mixture. Working materials specified are polymers and copolymers of vinyl acetate, vinyl butyrate, styrene, vinyl chloride and methyl methacrylate; and cellulose acetate, cellulose acetate butyrate, cellulose nitrate and ethyl cellulose. Plasticizers specified are compounds containing at least one ethylene oxide group per molecule; a condensation product of ethylene oxide; a compound containing at least one ether group per molecule; a compound containing at least one ester group per molecule; a carboxylic acid ester, an ester of a dicarboxylic acid containing at least one ethylene oxide group. The leaching agent is water. A permanent plasticizer such as dioctyl phthalate, dioctyl azelate and diotyl sebacate may be included in the single phase mixture. In an example, P.V.C. is dissolved in bis(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl) adipate and, after shaping, treated with water.
