In a hatch construction for multiple-decked ships, the hatch of the lower deck (2), Fig. 1 (not shown), is closable by hatch-closure plates (14) movable into vertical stowage positions (12) and the upper deck hatch coaming (7) and transverse winch housing wall (11) situated above the stowage places of closure plates (14) are provided with protruding upper flanges (8), (9) to make the hatch opening of the upper deck (1) lie vertically above, and be of the same dimensions as, the hatch opening of the lower deck (2). The protruding upper flanges (8), (9) together with the webs of upper deck coamings (3), (7) and transverse winch housing wall (11) form recesses larger in area than that of the stowage places of the lower deck closure plates (14). The hatch corners may be in parabolic form; Fig. 3 (not shown).
