Abstract

1,66,964. Electrophotographic processes. EASTMAN KODAK CO. Sept. 30, 1963 [Oct. 1, 1962], No. 38381/63. Heading G2H. In a reversal electrophotographic process, a photo-conductive layer 20, Fig. 4A, on a conductive support 21 is negatively charged by corona discharge 40. A half tone screen made up of opaque areas 41, Fig. 4B and clear areas 42 is placed in contact with layer 20, the opaque areas may be grid lines or uniform size dots of a half-tone screen. A negative 45, Fig. 4C, is then placed on the front surface of the screen 41, 42 and the layer 20 is imagewise exposed. Unexposed areas of the layer 20 remain charged while other areas 47 or 48 receive full exposure or partial exposure and are completely or partially discharged. The layer 20, Fig. 4D has partially charged areas, 23, 24, and 25 which receive toner 50, Fig. 4E, the least charged areas thus producing a reversal printed retaining the most toner, I.e. the areas of high electrostatic field. The toner is fixed by pressure, solvent or heat. The screen may be sharply focused on the photoconductive layer during exposure instead of being placed in contact therewith.
