Abstract

1,066,498. Removing railway ballast. KER-SHAW MANUFACTURING CO. Inc. Sept. 9, 1964 [Feb. 24, 1964], No. 36918/64. Heading E1F. An endless chain 62 for removing ballast from beneath railway rails and sleepers is supported on a vehicle frame, having track engaging wheels 11, in a vertical plane transverse to the track and has an upwardly inclined run moving over a slide member 71 to deposit ballast onto a conveyor unit 73. The lower chain sprockets 48, 49 are carried in support frames 24, 28 raisable out of the working position by hydraulic jacks 34 acting on parallel linkages 17, 18; the working height being predetermined by chains 39 secured to the frames and to rollers 37 located by detents engaging flanges 43. The tension of the scraper chain 62, which has ballast removing teeth at the leading side, is adjusted by a jack 53 pivotting the support 52 for the upper sprocket 58 about a pivot 51. The chain 62 moves dug ballast along the flanged slide 71, from whence it is deposited in a belt conveyor 73 discharging to the rear of the vehicle. A scamfrer may be secured to the vehicle frame ahead of the chain.
