Abstract

1,066,236. Hydraulic jet propulsion apparatus. KEMENCZKY ESTABLISHMENT. April 15, 1964 [April 16, 1963 (2); May 24, 1963], No. 15674/64. Heading B7V. [Also in Division F1] A jet propulsion engine, e.g. for watercraft, comprises a combustion chamber 3, ignition means 15, a thrust tube 9 having water inlet and outlet openings, a valve 10 connecting the thrust tube and the combustion chamber and a precombustion chamber 2 provided with an injection means 6 which is in communication with a fuel pump 1 arranged to be activated by the pressure in the thrust tube 9. As shown, to start the engine, combustion chamber 3 is filled with an explosive mixture via pipe 20. The mixture is then ignited by spark-plug 15 and creates a high pressure which blows the water out of thrust tube 9 and also moves a disc 12 and piston-rod 14 upwards against spring 13. This allows the liquid fuel from pump cylinder 19 to flow via pipe 5 to nozzle 6 for injecting into precombustion chamber 2. A vortex ring 7 mixes the fuel with air from intake 8 which can be regulated by sleeve 17. After each ignition and after the ejection of water from the thrust tube 9 a partial vacuum arises in the combustion chamber 3 opening check valve 4 to suck the mixture from precombustion chamber 2. This mixture is again ignited and water which has entered the thrust tube at inlet valve 11 is again ejected. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), disc 12 and piston 14 are replaced by a turbine wheel arranged at the outlet of the thrust tube which drives a rotating fuel pump. The turbine wheel is also shown driving an impeller to speed up the filling of the thrust tube with water after each explosion.
