Abstract

1,066,020. Laying pipe-lines under water; valves. BROWN & ROOT Inc. March 24. 1966, No. 13034/66. Headings F2P and F2V. Apparatus for laying elongate, flexible means such as pipe-lines assembled on a barge 12 comprises shoes 14 mounted on vertically adjustable, swivel pedestals 16 carrying horizontally and vertically mounted guide rollers 17, 18, and parallel pontoons 20 pivotally and rotatably connected to a ramp 10 and connected by hollow U-shapad cross-members 24 alternate ones of which carry oppositely inclined rollers (25), Fig. 7 (not shown). The pontoons are divided by bulkheads into sealed compartments 23, each of which is independently and selectively connected to a source of gas pressure and has a seacock 29 also connected to a source of gas pressure. The pipe-line is slid axially down the ramp formed by the pontoons and the buoyancy of the pontoons is regulated by admitting gas to the compartments to exhaust water therefrom or by opening the sea-cocks to allow water to enter the compartments. The sea-cocks 29, Fig. 6 (not shown), each comprise a piston (48) attached to a rod (52) which, as the piston is moved by compressed air admitted through pipe (31), pushes a ball (56) off a seat (60) and against the pressure of a spring (62) to allow water to enter a port (44) and pass to a port (46).
