Abstract
1,062,177. Mass spectrometers. ATLAS MESS-UND ANALYSENTECHNIK G.m.b.H. Dec. 10, 1963 [Dec. 10, 1962], No. 48799/63. Heading H1D. In a high-frequency mass spectrometer of the quadrupole or monopole type, described respectively in Specification 773,689 and the Review of Scientific Instruments 34 Jan. 1963, in which ions follow stable or unstable paths according to their masses in passing through a highfrequency electric field of hyperbolic form and in which the range of stable ions is determined by superimposing a D.C. voltage U on the A.C. voltage of amplitude V, the ratio U/V is not kept constant as the mass spectrum is swept, but is empirically adjusted to vary with V and hence with the mass number, in order to maintain a constant resolving power or.a constant transmission through the spectrometer over the mass range. The D.C. voltages are derived from the A.C. voltages through a voltage divider having non-linear, adjustable resistors.
