Abstract

1,061,901. Moulding thermoplastic tiles. DUNLOP SEMTEX Ltd. Aug. 27, 1963 [Sept. 5, 1962], No. 33940/62. Heading B5A. Tiles, of a thermoplastic material based upon, e.g. polyvinyl-chloride, and having a terrazzo effect on one face and an inter-fused effect upon the other, are compression moulded between a first plate having a temperature within or above the softening range of the thermoplastic material and a second plate having a temperature below said range. In one embodiment the material, in comminuted form, is moulded between heated press platens in a double mould comprising a separator plate located between two end plates. The separator plate is preheated to a temperature above the end plates and the moulding performed, the mould being subsequently transferred to and cooled under pressure in a press having cooled platens. The comminuted material may comprise chips of different colours or comprise multi-coloured chips, or may contain a metallic powder such as aluminium or aluminium-bronze.
