Abstract
1,057,778. Hydraulically opened slab tongs. SOC. FIVES LILLE-CAIL. May 22, 1964 [June 12, 1963], No. 21256/64. Heading B8H A pair of slab-tongs 10, 12, which are opened by an hydraulic ram 22, have a hydropneumatic accumulator communicating with the chamber above the piston in the ram 22 which serves to absorb sudden shocks in the hydraulic system which occur when the tongs are in use. A safety valve prevents sufficient hydraulic pressure being developed to open the tongs when a load is being lifted. A pump and electric motor for the hydraulic fluid are accommodated within a frame 20 or on a grab of a crane from which the tongs are suspended. To open the grab fluid is supplied to the ram 22 through a three-position switch which may be operated by solenoids or manually. When the tongs are open the three-position valve is returned to its central position in which the chamber above the piston and the accumulator are isolated from the rest of the system. The tongs are thus held open, and shocks are absorbed by the accumulator which may be filled with compressed nitrogen. The accumulator may comprise an annular body within the piston chamber and form a seal between the piston-rod and the ram body.
