Abstract

859,402. Multi-jawed grabs. CELLA, L. Sept. 29, 1958, No. 31018/58. Class 78 (4). Jaws 8 of a multi-jawed grab are pivoted about axes 7 on a body member 1 by means of double-acting hydraulic rams 5, 6 pivoted between the jaws and the body member 1. The body member 1 contains a suction pump, driven by a reversible electric motor, which passes hydraulic fluid from a reservoir, also contained in the body member 1, through a three-way valve to one or other of annular chambers 10, 11 mounted on the body member and connected to the lower and upper working chambers respectively of each cylinder 5 to open or close the jaws. The grab is remotely controlled by operating a reversing switch and can be operated without the motor-driven pump and associated valves by connecting the annular chambers 10, 11 through pipes 36, 37 with an external source of fluid pressure.
