Abstract

1,056,530. Variable-speed belt gearing. SHEEPBRIDGE ENGINEERING Ltd., and M. ASHWORTH. June 22, 1965 [Sept. 22, 1964], No. 38645/64. Heading F2D. In steplessly variable-speed countershaft belt gearing, e.g. for a lathe, expanding pulleys 22, 34 on input and output shafts 10, 26 respectively, with common control so that when one expands the other contracts, are drivingly connected by a belt 75, expanding pulleys 59, 58 carried for rotation together on a countershaft 59a, and a belt 76, a single member 55 forming the axially movable flanges 57, 56 of the pulleys 59, 58, the shaft 59a being carried by a frame 61, pivoted at 62 (Fig. 4, not shown), and adjustably spring-urged to maintain belt tension. The flange 19 of the input pulley 22 is secured by a pin 17 (Fig. 1, not shown), extending through a slot 15 in the shaft 10 to engage in a rod 16 extending within the shaft 10 and rotatably secured to a yoke 25 for axial movement therewith, the flange 32 of the output pulley 34 being similarly secured to a rod 30 also rotatably secured to the yoke 25. The yoke 25 is moved by screws 37, 38 driven through gears 51, 48, 46, 44, 45 by manual, electric, hydraulic, or pneumatic means. Alternatively, cam, hydraulic or pneumatic means may act directly on the yoke 25. As the flanges 32, 19 are moved axially for ratio change, the axially movable flange member 55 on the countershaft adjusts its position automatically.
