A double-ended spanner has a handle composed of two relatively slidable longitudinal members 1<SP>1</SP>, 1<SP>11</SP>, means being provided whereby the members may be secured in adjusted position, one of the members having an opening as at 4 providing nut engaging flats as at 6<SP>1</SP> and the end of the other member nearest the flats 6<SP>1</SP> having opposing counter flats 6<SP>11</SP>. The member 1<SP>11</SP> is slidably arranged between the flanges 2 of the U-section member 1<SP>1</SP>. A plate 20 is pivotally and eccentrically mounted in the middle of the member 1<SP>1</SP> on a bolt 22, the hub of the bolt passing through a longitudinal guide slot 24 in the sliding member 1<SP>11</SP>. The plate 20 has an even number of notches 21 arranged at different distances from the axis of rotation of the plate and in diametrically opposed pairs engaged in two projecting lugs 23 spaced longitudinally on the member 1<SP>11</SP>. The bolt 22 is provided at its free end with a leaf spring 26 which bears on the base of a recess 27 in the handle 1. The spanner is adjusted by lifting the plate 20 against the force of the spring 26 and rotating the disc. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), a pair of laterally projecting jaws are provided at one end of the handle. The plate 20 has stop faces 21 arranged diametrically in pairs, the distance between each two opposite faces of a pair being less than the distance between the stop faces 23 to allow the disc 20 to be rotated without impedance by the stops.
