Abstract
Steel containing one or more of Sb, Nb, Bi, Pb in a total amount of 0.003 - 0.1% by weight is converted to strip by hot and cold rolling, and is then annealed at 500-750 DEG C. in an atmosphere containing hydrogen and water vapour to reduce its carbon content to less than 0.02% and optionally its nitrogen content to less than 0.002%. The steel may contain 0.15 - 0.6% of manganese. When low nitrogen content is not of importance, annealing may be carried out in DX gas, i.e. one formed by partial combustion of hydrocarbon gases and containing by volume 10-12% hydrogen, 9-10% carbon monoxide, 5-6% carbon dioxide and the remainder nitrogen.
