Abstract
1,053,717. Disc springs; mechanical seals. HUGHES TOOLS CO. Sept. 10, 1964 [Oct. 18, 1963], No. 37158/64. Headings F2B and F2S. A disc or Belleville spring 1 (Fig. 4, not shown) has at least part of its outer surface coldworked so that the spring is non-invertible. The spring before it is cold-worked may be single or multi-conical (Figs. 8, 9, not shown). The cold-working may be accomplished in various ways, e.g. by peening with steel shot, sand blasting or grit blasting. In the construction shown in Fig. 5 the spring 25 is used as a sealing ring between a bit leg 11 and a rolling cutter 13 of a conventional rock bit 10. The spring may be provided with a part or whole covering of rubber when used as a sealing ring for the rock bit (Fig. 10, not shown). The spring prevents the loss of lubrication G from the roller 14 and the ingress of abrasive particles.
