Abstract

1,048,650. Toothed intermittent gearing. VEEDER INDUSTRIES Inc. Nov. 12, 1963 [Nov. 23, 1962], No. 44625/63. Heading F2Q. [Also in Divisions G3 and G4] In an intermittent drive mechanism connecting a driven wheel 18 with a wheel 16 drivingly supported by an input shaft 14, e.g. in a clock or counting device, a mutilated pinion 60, freely rotatable on an eccentric hub 62 of the wheel 16 and having axially shortened teeth 102, 104, meshes with an internal gear 65 in the wheel 18. A spring 67 passing round a collar 74 rotatable on the hub 62 connects a pin 68, on an arm 100 integral with the pinion 60, to a lug 70 on an arm 72 secured to the collar 74 to urge the arms 72; 100. against shoulders 82, 84 respectively, formed in the mutilated internal gear 66 of a fixed plate 24. As the wheel 16 rotates, the pinion 60 moves from a datum position (Fig. 4) to mesh first with a tooth 106 and then with a tooth 108 of the internal gear 66, thereby rotating the pinion 60 anti-clockwise, Fig. 4. When the pinion 60 ceases, to mesh with tooth 108, the spring 67 causes the pinion to spring back to the datum position, imparting an impulsive drive to the previously static wheel 18 without affecting the input shaft 14. In a second intermittent drive mechanism (Fig, 2, not shown), between wheels 18 and 20, as the wheel 18 rotates, a mutilated pinion 40 rotatably mounted eccentrically thereon planetates about the wheel's axis of rotation in mesh with substantially identical internal gears 44, 46 respectively formed in a fixed plate 26 and the wheel 20, the gear 44 having a section 48 formed by the omission of two teeth, the wheel 20 remaining stationary except when the pinion 40 crosses the section 48, when a projection 50 on a fixed plate 25 prevents rotation of the pinion 40, causing the wheel 20 to be driven. Both forms of intermittent drive are used in a twelve-hour clock, Fig. 1, having an hours wheel 22, a minutes tens wheel 20, numbered from 0 to 5 twice, a minutes units wheel 18, and a seconds wheel 16 displaying time intervals of six seconds, wheels 18, 20 and 22 being rotatably carried by the input shaft 14. Fixed plates 10, 12, 24-28, are connected by a circular rod 36 and hexagonal rods 29 having reduced portions 31 engaging in slots 32 of the plates.
