Abstract

1,047,645. Yarn-catchers; stop motions. VOLKMANN & CO. Feb. 4, 1964 [Feb. 4, 1963; Sept. 16, 1963), No. 4689/64. Heading D1D. A multi-twist (e.g. a 2:1 twister) apparatus has a yarn catcher, which, when the yarn breaks, moves to trap the yarn running into the end of the spindle-tube and prevent more yarn being drawn off the package. Yarn 2 Fig. 2, (not shown), drawn off a package passes through a spindle-tube 3 and forms a balloon between the bottom of the tube and an eyelet 5. A comb 6 is fixed to an inclined shaft 19 also carrying a feeler 21. When the yarn breaks, the feeler arm is no longer held, and due to the inclination of the shaft 19 swings away from the yarn, rotating shaft 19 and causing the comb to trap the yarn near the spindle tube 3. At the moment the yarn breaks, the balloon collapses, and the guide 5 which is supported by the balloon and is pivoted at 22, falls to position 21<SP>1</SP>. To restore the parts, the feeler arm is moved back to a preparatory position where the guide arm 21 rides over an inclined face 27 of the feeler arm and falls into a gap 28. The feeler and catcher arms are thus held outside the range of the yarn. The yarn is pieced, rethreaded through the spindle-tube and the apparatus restarted, whereupon the yarn is tensioned and moves the yarn guide into full-line position and releases the feeler and catcher arms to resume their normal positions. In Fig. 4, (not shown), the parts assume the positions shown in full lines when the yarn breaks, 35 being the catcher and 36 the feeler both carried on a pivoted arm 32. To reset the parts, the arm is moved to be held on a preparatory position 32<SP>1</SP>, a pivoted link 39 moving in a track 42 inside a fixed wire loop and being deflected by an abutment 43 into a holding recess 50. When the apparatus is restarted, the tensioning of the yarn moves the arm to 32<SP>11</SP>, the link moving out of the recess into position 51. When the yarn breaks, the link passes a one-way catch 47 into the full-line position. When the apparatus is at rest with the thread intact the tension is enough to maintain the arm 32 when the catcher is still some distance from the spindle-tube 48. In another form, the catcher arm is slidable in an inclined guide and is normally retained by a catch operated electromagnetically when the yarn breaks. The deflection of the feeler may also be used to actuate a stop motion or initiate doffing of the winding-on spool.
