Abstract

1,044,419. Container closures. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. April 26, 1965 [May 21, 1964], No. 17495/65. Heading B8T. A cap 15 is partially coated on the inside with a plastics-like compound 23 so that when an anvil 24 presses the cap on to a container rim 11, the plastics-like compound flows and sets to form embossments which mate with discontinuous thread portions 20 on the container rim. A punch 25 slightly bends a curled rim 19, formed to make rigid the cap, which is preferably metal, into a neck 12 of the container 10. A cam surface 21 on each of the thread portions 20, presses against the embossment formed by the hardened plastics-like compound to force the cap upwards when it is unscrewed. The plastics-like compound is preferably a plasticized polyvinyl chloride plastisol containing gas bubbles and known as a puffed or foamed plastisol, but rubber, synthetic rubber, foam polyurethane or foam polyethylene &c. could also be used. If the seal has to be made at a temperature higher than room temperature, plasticized polyvinyl chloride or polyethylene or hot melts could form the basis of the sealing compound. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the curled rim 19 is not bent into the container neck 12 and the cap 15 is held in place by the plastics-like compound alone. In a second modification, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), a lower section 31 of the cap is cylindrical and the rim 32 is curled inwardly. A thick fillet of plastics-like compound is formed over the lower part of the discontinuous threads 36 embossed on the container rim 35 and the curled rim 32 may be bent into the container neck 34. In a third modification, Figs. 6, 7 (not shown), both a section 43 of the cap adjacent the top and a section 45 adjacent the curled rim are cylindrical. Continuous threads 50 are embossed on the container rim 49 and merge smoothly with a cylindrical portion 51 of the container rim. The plastics-like compound flows over the entire length of the rim 49 and also into the curled rim 46 of the cap 40 to cover its edge 53.
