Abstract

1,224,999. Container closures. ALUMINUM CO. OF AMERICA. 8 Nov., 1968 [14 Nov., 1967], No. 53149/68. Heading B8T. A closure fitment 10 of the type described in Specification 1,224,998 (or the type of cap with a top portion removed) is secured to a neck of a container 64 by the application of pressure around the circumference of a bead 20 of the fitment so as to effect inward curling of the bead. The hollow bead 20 is of such a diameter that it is able to curl within itself in response to the pressure and in any event is less than eight times the nominal gauge of the sheet material. The radius 40 is the minimum bend radius which will not result in fracture in making the bend. Liner 50 may be formed from rubber, paper, cardboard or synthetic plastics. Sealing head 74 is applied to the top of the fitment 10 to seal liner 50 against surface 66, and thereafter relative movement of the sleeve 78 inwardly deforms bead 20. In modified forms of liner, the sealing surface is made in the side of the neck or at the undersurface 70.
