Abstract
1,043,758. Vibration dampers. HOUDAILLE INDUSTRIES Inc. Sept. 25, 1964, No. 39241/64. Heading F2S. In a vibration damper an inertia mass 12 is connected to a supporting member by a plurality of resiliently flexible cable elements 13. The supporting member 11 is connected as through screws 15 to a shaft 14, e.g. the crankshaft of an internal-combustion engine. The ends of the elements 13 are housed and welded in apertures in the supporting member and the inertia mass. The edges of the apertures from which the elements protrude are chamfered or bell-shaped as at 23, 21. A second inertia mass may be mounted on each element, one on each end with the supporting member clamping the middle portions of the elements (Figs. 5, 6, not shown). The elements may be arranged such that their axes are radially disposed with respect to the supporting member to give a spoke-like display (Figs. 3, 4, not shown). The use of a plurality of rows of elements is disclosed. In a further construction (Fig. 7, not shown), the supporting member 107 is provided with a plurality of studs 112 and the inertia mass 110 is provided with frames 114 on its outer periphery. The frames 114 surround the studs 112 and are filled with cushions 117 of frictionally-engaging strand material 122 packed in a pre-stressed mass. Knitted steel wire is preferred. The cushions are formed in two halves and are retained on the studs 112 by washers 124 spot-welded to shoulders on the studs. The cushions are held in the frames by pins 118. The frames 114 instead of being welded to the inertia member may be formed integral therewith. The feature of using compactly massed filaments as a connecting and damping means may be incorporated in torsional vibrating systems combined with linearly vibrating systems.
