Automatic circuit-breakers; retarding-devices.- An automatic overload cut-out comprises a switch arm 1 closed by hand and locked in the closed position against the action of the weight 4 by the pawl 2, which is raised when the normally locked plunger 3, acted on by the spring 8, is released. The plunger is locked in the inoperative position shown, by the circular part of the periphery of a cam 10, the shaft of which drives through speedraising gearing the drum of a centrifugal brake, Fig. 4, having rollers 27 which move outwards against the action of springs 28 and frictionally engage the inside of a fixed hollow cylinder 23 at the limit speed. With excessive current in the solenoid 14, the core 13 is attracted and the cam rotated through the intermediary of a steel wire 30 attached to the core. After an interval of time, depending on the adjustment of the springs 28 of the retarding-device, a gap in the cam is brought into line with a roller 9 on the end of the plunger 3, which is then free to rise and knock out the latch.
